Modifying a PC Port
Disclaimer - This technical note provides
information specific to the Multitech Fax Modems, however it
also provides information that is generic in the
modification of a port (Point#6). This document is NOT a
replacement for the product "Instructions" for the
Multitech Fax/Modems. It is our comments and the steps we
followed to set the modem up in-house using the FAXDIR
driver and ACCFAX. This does not replace the possible need
to call Multitech to get expert technical support on their
product. Bravo Software Group is not a reseller of the
Multitech products nor do we provide support for them.
Steps in Setup
of the Multitech model MT5634ZPX ISA fax/modem with ACCFAX
and the fax driver FAXDIR shipped with ACCFAX.
1. Install the
hardware in your PC using the MultiTech instructions. We
accepted the factory settings on the fax/modem.
2. Set the
Windows driver supplied for this modem. We tried to use the
CD that came with the modem but for some reason Windows
could not pick it up correctly. Instead we had to go to
their web site and download a current driver for the
fax/modem. Be sure its the correct modem and it is an ISA
board. We rebooted Windows after it was installed.
3. Create a
special Windows ICON to shell to DOS that will eventually
load the FAXDIR driver and start your ACCPAC System Manager
as described in the ACCFAX manual.
4. Be sure the
edit the CONFIG.SYS to set BUFFERS=35
5. Install
FAXDIR fax driver by inserting the FAXDIR diskette in your
floppy drive and typing A:INSTALL.
6. When the
SETUPFD program is run, follow the ACCFAX manual for certain
settings to check. Go into Hardware Setup. We had to select
the user configurable PORT "USER". You may be able
to use one of the default COM ports and their interrupts.
For USER we set the BASE Address to 2E8 and the interrupt to
7. TAB or ENTER to those fields. Delete the default contents
and enter your address and interrupt IRQ that is suitable
for your PC. We used driver CLASS 1. Fill in the rest of the
settings as described in the ACCFAX manual. Be sure the go
through Misc Setup and set the QUEUE file to the default
folder FAXDIR. It should create the file if it has not been
already.
7. Once
finished, at the DOS prompt enter FAXDIR FAXDIR.CFG to load
the FAXDIR program and configuration. Initially we had
problems getting ours to load. Re-boot your PC and double
check for possible interrupt conflicts and ensure Windows
can see the modem and run Diagnostics through Control Panel,
System Settings for the Modem.
8. Run the
FAXDIR program CLEARLOG to make sure it is initialized
properly. In fact, it may be a good idea to run it before
any faxes go from ACCFAX. You could include it in the
special BAT file that loads FAXDIR.
9. Run the
FAXDIR program "FAXSEND 9053316603 c:\autoexec.bat
" to test the modem communications out to see if it can
send to your Fax Machine. Please use your fax number in the
place of ours! If this does not work then there is no point
in starting ACCFAX. The driver must work first.
10. Start up
ACCPAC and run ACCFAX sample data. Edit the Company Profile
and change the FAX Number to yours. Then Edit the Add/Modifiy/Delete
Exchanges and define your Exchange and Area Code as a
locally dialed number. Run Send Fax Batch. Choose a sample
job. Choose TEST to try and FAX a sample form to yourself.
If it dials, and you don't receive a fax, then ensure it is
dialing the right number or that the number is free. If is
still a problem, shell to DOS using F3 DOS, and type "MEM".
This will show you to CONVENTIONAL MEMORY FREE. You should
have at least 540K free. ACCFAX requires this much base
memory to work correctly. If not, load EMS through your
AUTOEXEC.BAT and load some network drivers, DOS etc in HIGH
memory to free up conventional.
11. You
are ready to go.
