PocketPC versus Palm - What to look for |
| |
More and more companies are standardizing on the PocketPC as their handheld unit of choice. We have definitely seen an increase in PocketPC integrated solutions, so to help you when it is time for your next big handheld decision, here are some things to consider.
| Features and Applications |
Pocket PC 2002 Software |
Palm OS 5.0 Software |
| Ease of Use |
The Pocket PC 2002 is Windows Powered, providing the power and familiarity of Windows that you are used to. Pocket versions of popular Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Windows Media Player® and Outlook® eliminate the need to learn new software.
|
Palm requires you to learn both new desktop and device software programs.
In many cases, add-on or third-party applications are required to provide the functionality that already exists in Pocket PC (such as pocket versions of Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows Media Player).
|
| Desktop Synchronization |
Microsoft® ActiveSync® technology helps ensure that your current data is always with you when you need it. ActiveSync® supports 4 different ways to synchronize data: 1) Automatic; 2) Continuous; 3) Scheduled; or 4) Manual.
|
Palm's sync technology requires users to manually initiate synchronization. Thus, if you forget, your updated data remains on your desktop.
|
| E-mail* |
Microsoft Pocket Outlook is the best companion to Outlook. It provides full support for POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail including HTML messages, meeting requests, Word and Excel attachments, and reply by voice functionality.
|
Either an add-on Palm or a third-party e-mail software solution must be installed in RAM, reducing available memory for other applications.
|
| Browsing |
A multi-mode browser, Pocket Internet Explorer supports both HTML and WAP, SSL-protected transactions, XML Web services, and rapid synchronization of web pages for a rich off-line viewing experience.
|
Palm's Web Browser Pro is not a dual mode browser. Their browser is an add-on application which must be installed in RAM, and uses free memory in some devices.
|
| Infrared Send and Receive |
Support for universal beaming of all file formats for Pocket PC 2002 applications -- contacts, schedule, Office documents, images or music.
|
Beaming support is not universal, but instead application specific. This means you may not be able to beam all your files.
|
| Network Connections* |
Connection Manager Technology automates the management of all your connections (i.e. home and work), making connecting simple.
|
Connections must be configured application by application.
|
| Data Input |
Enter information the way that's convenient for you. Pocket PC 2002 offers 6 data input options including 1) voice; 2) soft keyboard; 3) Rich Ink; 4) Letter and block printing recognizer; 5) Transcriber, a natural handwriting recognition application; and 6) a method of text input familiar to users of Graffiti.
|
Users must learn to use unnatural input methods (i.e. Graffiti). Does not offer either 1) a natural handwriting recognition application or 2) a letter and block printing recognizer, two of the most intuitive input methods.
|
| VPN Client (PPTP)* |
Integrated support for Virtual Private Network connections.
|
Requires additional third-party software to be installed in RAM at an additional cost.
|
| Terminal Services Client* |
A full mobile version of Terminal Services Client provides for remote access to Microsoft Windows®-based servers to run applications or perform server maintenance.

New Bar Code Printing Module |
| |
Our latest RemoteDesk add-on now allows you to print the actual bar codes from ACCPAC or Adagio.
It provides for item number translations into UPC codes or external part numbers when using the Pocket PC product. This allows the PocketPC to scan one part number but have the accounting system keep another. This new feature can also print the bar codes for your translated items using 1 of 4 external part numbers kept with each item code. The program can print 13 different bar code formats including Code39 and Code128. There is a second report that will print the bar code along with the actual item part number and the item description as lines on a page. This is useful where bar code labels are not available on the product but the printed item pages can be used to scan quickly the part number for hand-held device order taking.
Introductory price of $995.
